Alison Van Pelt
Alison Van Pelt is an American artist, born in Los Angeles in 1963, where she lives and works. Trained at UCLA and later in Florence, she developed a distinctive technique based on photographic images. Her work connects Photorealism, Expressionism, Minimalism, and Pop culture: an initially precise image is gradually veiled until it moves between presence, speed, and memory.
The artist first paints her subject with great precision, then patiently blurs the surface with a brush. This gesture turns the recognizable image into an apparition: portrait, animal, or object seems to emerge through a veil of memory. Up close, material and abstraction dominate; from a distance, the figure returns. Each painting therefore moves between presence and erasure, clarity and mystery.
Van Pelt has exhibited widely in American galleries and institutions. Her work renews Photorealism by giving it emotional and temporal depth: it does not merely reproduce a photograph, but evokes how an image remains within us. This quiet tension gives her paintings lasting elegance and a particularly magnetic presence.
