David Gerstein
David Gerstein is an Israeli painter and sculptor, born in Jerusalem in 1944, where he lives and works. Trained at Bezalel, the Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Art Students League in New York, and Saint Martin’s in London, he later taught at Bezalel for nearly twenty years. Cut metal allows him to transform everyday movement, color, and rhythm into immediately recognizable wall sculptures.
From the late 1970s onward, Gerstein sought to free painting from the flat surface. He developed wall sculptures in cut metal, assembled in several layers and painted by hand. Cyclists, musicians, flowers, birds, and urban scenes burst beyond the frame in joyful motion. Depth, shadow, and color transform each work with changing light.
Represented in leading Israeli museums and many public spaces worldwide, particularly in Asia, Gerstein has received several international distinctions. His work brings art and daily life together with contagious energy. “Peloton Wave,” one of his emblematic motifs, perfectly embodies his ability to turn collective movement, color, and rhythm into sculpture.
