Steven Salzman
Steven Salzman is an American artist who was born, raised, and remains based in New York City, where he lives and works. Trained at the Art Students League, Bard College, Hunter College, and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, he draws on the city grid and its changing light to build geometric abstraction that is intense, rhythmic, and deeply optical.
His paintings combine geometry, optical depth, and interference colors that change according to the viewer’s position. This instability of light turns looking into participation: the surface appears to breathe, advance, or recede. Salzman also draws on science, cosmology, and spirituality, opening his compositions to meanings that extend beyond formal concerns.
Exhibited in New York and Los Angeles, he has had a solo exhibition at the Nassau County Museum of Art and received a commission from Bard College. He also created an advertising campaign for Absolut Vodka. His work unites conceptual precision with sensory experience in an abstraction that is both intellectually engaging and visually compelling.
