Yoram Raanan
Yoram Raanan is an American-Israeli artist, born in 1953, who has lived and worked in Israel since 1976. Trained in the United States before settling there, he developed a gestural abstraction shaped by biblical memory and spiritual experience. Free movement, deep color, and flashes of light create vibrant paintings open to multiple interpretations.
His practice is physical and intuitive: he pours, splashes, spreads, and scrapes paint, sometimes using his fingers or a palette knife, building and removing layer after layer. This controlled freedom reveals landscapes, figures, and symbolic echoes while keeping them open. Contrasts between light and darkness give his canvases dramatic depth and a distinctive vibration.
Recognized within contemporary Jewish art, Raanan seeks to connect viewers with a greater sense of self and place in the world. His works combine visual power, spiritual density, and the pleasure of discovery, with each new encounter revealing another possible image.
